Essential lavender oil is one of our favorite ingredients for not only its amazing scent, but also its endless therapeutic benefits.
According to FoxNews.com, a recent study reported in the September 17Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medication revealed that breathing in the aroma of lavender oil can reduce not only stress but also pain.
The study tested 30 volunteers who experienced similar pain when needles were inserted into their skin. The group that inhaled the aroma of lavender oil before the second half of the study showed decreased pain from insertion of the needles. Researchers concluded that the scent of lavender significantly aided the study participants with pain.
Lavender, a species of mint indigenous to the Mediterranean region, contains a group of aromatic compounds including linalyl acetate, linalool, cineol, camphor, and limonene, which are believed to reduce the perception of pain and reduce inflammation.
Lavender has been used for centuries all over the world for aromatherapy in spa products as well as an antiseptic. Lavender is often recommended for a variety of ailments, including burns, insomnia, pain and psoriasis. Lavender is also regularly recommended for reducing stress and anxiety, which are common triggers of skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. By reducing stress, the aroma of lavender oil can boost the immune system and improve your mood.
The Fox News article also notes that, in animal studies, lavender oil was shown to calm the nervous system. Lavender oil has also been cited in the Journal of The National Cancer Instituteas a possible substitute for the chemotherapeutic drug Tamoxifen.
