Many of us enjoy a cup (or two or three or four cups) of coffee in the morning to perk us up for the day and make us feel more like ourselves. However, did you know that the caffeine in coffee that gives us that extra boost of energy in the morning may also have powerful benefits on our skin?
Research indicates that coffee and caffeine may have powerful benefits on our skin, making it look more radiant and healthier.
Coffee can energize our skin cells just like it energizes our bodies. According to a 2012 study conducted by the Academy of Cosmetics and Health Care in Warsaw, Poland, caffeine has been shown to prevent excessive accumulation of fat in cells. It also increases microcirculation of blood in the skin, potentially reducing the appearance of cellulite.
Additionally, the study determined that caffeine has potent antioxidant properties, potentially protecting cells from UV radiation and slowing down the process of photoaging of the skin.
Studies have also found that caffeine may reduce inflammation in the skin. For example, a 1978 study conducted by The University of Tennessee concluded that the addition of caffeine to anti-inflammatory creams increased their effectiveness.
