World Oceans Day: Help Protect our Oceans

World Oceans Day is celebrated each year on June 8th. Originally proposed by the Canadian government in 1992, World Oceans Day has grown into a global celebration to honor oceans, promote conservation, and raise environmental awareness about the state of our oceans.

It is crucial to conserve and protect our oceans.  Oceans are not only home to over 1 million identified species, they are extremely important to the maintenance of global climate. In addition, oceans generate oxygen, provide us with food, and many ocean plants have medicinal benefits that are extracted and used in pharmaceuticals.

One of the biggest environmental concerns is the amount of plastic making its way into our oceans. Worldoceansday.org shares some sobering facts about plastic such as:

  • 80% of plastic found in oceans came from dry land
  • We use more than one million plastic bags a minute
  • One million seabirds are killed annually from the plastic in our oceans

So what can you do? Reduce, reuse, and recycle. WorldOceansDay.org also has a handy guide on plastic pollution and what you can do to make a difference and get involved.

The Seaweed Bath Co. is committed to the sustainability of the ocean and its species.

We use bottles that are made from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic to help reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills and oceans each year. We also use sustainably practices when harvesting our main ingredient, bladderwrack seaweed. Our seaweed harvested by hand in a way that allows it to regenerate to the same size or larger than we found it within 36 months. You can watch our harvesting story here

In honor of World Oceans Day, we are donating $1 for every purchase on our website today, June 8, 2017, to World Oceans Day. Learn more about World Oceans Day and what can you do to protect our oceans here
