We are all aware of (and many of us can relate to) America’s obsession with coffee. The aroma, the health benefits, and that extra kick of caffeine can be so enticing and downright addictive. These powerful qualities that draw us in to consume coffee daily can also have huge benefits for our skin. In honor of National Coffee Day, we are breaking down the top four reasons you should consider incorporating coffee into your beauty routine.
]]>Coffee is loaded with antioxidants that help to defend against environmental toxins and free radicals our skin encounters on a daily basis.
Coffee grounds make an excellent and gentle exfoliator to remove rough patches and dry skin for softer, more radiant-looking skin.
Coffee is known to help increase collagen production, which promotes skin cell regeneration and can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.
The stimulating properties of coffee can help improve blood flow and circulation, waking up your skin for a brighter, more radiant look.
We love coffee so much that we use it in many of our products. Our Exfoliating Detox Body Soap contains Arabica Coffee that gently exfoliates and detoxifies while improving the texture of skin. Our full Detox Body Care line, including Detox Body Cream, Detox Body Scrub and Detox Body Wash, all contain Green Coffee Bean Extract, which is loaded with antioxidants and helps protect skin against damaging free radicals.

With Fall and then the holidays just around the corner, taking care of our health and skin is just as important as ever. While the sun may not be as much of a concern in the fall and winter months, our skin comes in contact with environmental toxins on a daily basis that can damage skin and speed up the aging process. We share a few of our favorite tips to help detoxify and protect your skin to help keep it clean and healthy year-round.
]]>Working out isn’t only good for your body and mind (we’ll take all the endorphins please!), but it can actually help detox your skin! Sweating can help open up and unclog pores and cleanse impurities from your body. To really get your sweat on, you may also want to try stepping into a sauna a few days a week.
Green tea and other herbal teas have antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe skin from the inside out. Some teas can even help reduce cortisol to improve stress levels. Stress can be a major contributor to acne breakouts, so pour yourself a nice cup of hot herbal tea sooner rather than later. Green tea and chamomile have great benefits for inflamed skin, but we also recommend giving Yogi Tea’s Soothing Rose Hibiscus Tea a try. This herbal tea combines a mixture of several herbs to help detox skin.
Everyday pollutants from the environment seep into your pores causing irritation and inflammation. Over time, pollution can even lead the the depletion of collagen and elasticity in the skin. Try our detox facial bar, which is gentle enough to use twice daily. Follow up with our marine restoring serum and day cream to protect against pollutants throughout the day. To detox the rest of your skin, try one of our Detox Body Washes made with mineral-rich French clay helps to purify skin and wash away toxins and impurities.
Whenever possible, limit your intake of sugar and inflammatory foods. We know this is easier said than done, but the benefits can be huge! Sugar spikes your levels of insulin and increases levels of uric acid that cause inflammation. Other foods that cause inflammation include: artificial trans-fats, refined carbohydrates, seed and vegetable oils, processed meat and excessive alcohol. You may notice a huge difference in your skin and your energy levels by cutting back on these items. Focus on healthy, immune-boosting fruits and vegetables and lean proteins.
Use a dry brush on your skin or an exfoliating scrub like our detox scrub, made with walnut shells to gently remove dead skin cells. Exfoliating or using a dry brush regularly can help stimulate blood circulation and the lymphatic system. Stimulating the lymphatic system helps reduce inflammation. Bonus: it may also help reduce the appearance of cellulite.

]]>Remember, under that beard is skin that needs to be nourished and treated like the rest of your facial care. Using a mild exfoliant 2-3 times a week to get to the skin underneath your beard can help prevent rashes, ingrown hairs, or other skin irritation. It can also remove dead, dry skin cells from your beard and promote healthy hair growth.
Your beard carries germs and bacteria and maybe even, ahem, crumbs and scent. While bacteria is normal on skin and hair, it’s important to wash your beard 2-3 times a week to promote healthy hair growth and to neutralize odors. Just like the hair on your head, your beard hair can be an odor trapper. Try a moisturizing shampoo that will both cleanse and condition those coarse hairs on your chin.
Keeping that beard sculpted is key. It doesn’t matter how long or short your beard is, but you should sculpt your beard by trimming it to a similar shape to your natural jaw line. Keeping up with the occasional trim also helps to promote healthy hair growth and avoid split-ends.
Whether you reach for a bear balm or oil, you should pick up one of these products to keep your beard and skin underneath your beard moisturized. Balms are typically thicker, take longer to absorb into the skin and hair and give a matte finish. Beard oils tend to absorb more quickly and leave hair with a shinier finish than balms. For best results, follow the recommended application instructions on your beard balm or oil as to how many times a day or week the product should be applied.
Use a small beard comb or brush to brush your beard. Just like the hairs on your head, you should brush your beard every day. This allows natural oils and beard oil to be evenly distributed throughout your whiskers. Additionally, it helps to tame wild hairs into submission.

]]>We all need a little alone time now and then, and baths are great way to treat yourself and your skin. Our Hydrating Seaweed Bath provides the perfect spa experience without leaving your home. Just close our eyes and imagine we are near the ocean. Adding aromatherapy, such as lavender, will help relax you mind and your senses while your body soaks.
Taking walks is not only healthy for your body, but also for your mind. Studies have shown that taking a 20-minute mid-day walk can help reduce tension and stress throughout your day. Give yourself some alone time and take a stroll during those crazy work days.
It’s easy to forget to take time for yourself. After a long day, find a quiet place to close your eyes, meditate and relax. You deserve some piece and quiet. Also, don’t forget to drink your water throughout the day. Studies have shown that dehydration increases the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, so it’s important to stay hydrated.

]]>More than just a summer staple, Aloe is a succulent plant that has been used for its cosmetic and medicinal benefits for centuries. Aloe is an abundant plant that thrives in dry, temperate, subtropical and tropical climates, making it the perfect ingredient for protecting and hydrating skin.
]]>Vitamin B complex and folic acid found in Aloe help skin and hair retain moisture and can help strengthen the epidermis, leaving skin and hair feeling soft and smooth.
Aloe contains phytosterols, a compound found in plant membranes, which can help soothe your skin and scalp.
Aloe contains Vitamins A, C and E, which can help protect skin from damaging free radicals and environmental stressors.
Vitamin C found in Aloe can help boost collagen production. Collagen is essential to skin’s health and can help to slow the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Both our Detox and Hydrating Body Wash formulas use aloe as a skin-softening, ultra-hydrating ingredient to improve the look and feel of your skin.
Aloe in our Hydrating Body Creams helps to hydrate and restore skin to keep skin moisturized all day long and protect against environmental stressors and sun damage.
Aloe is an important ingredient in our Moisturizing Argan Shampoo and Conditioner to gently hydrate and nourish your hair and scalp, for shinier, healthier-looking locks.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had to deal with facial acne. In high school, my acne got so bad I would try just about anything: spot treatments, harsh creams provided by the dermatologist, etc. I even resorted to using Accutane, which I’ve regretted to this day. I was desperate to try anything to gain a little self-esteem. I even used makeup that was specifically for breakouts and it left my skin feeling dry and stressed out.
I thought my breakouts would subside by the time I was an adult, but between grad school, working, and planning a wedding, stressed skin was my unfortunate reality. As an informed consumer, I now look for products that are natural, vegan, and not harsh on the environment. Now, you couldn’t pay me to touch the stuff my dermatologist used to prescribe!
I decided to give the Seaweed Bath Co.’s Purifying Detox Facial Bar a try. I usually reach for some sort of liquid soap when it comes to my face, so I was curious how I would feel about a facial bar soap. This was my process each morning/night:
Immediately after using the soap, I noticed my skin felt a little tighter and cleaner. I loved the way the volcanic ash exfoliated my skin. I felt like the exfoliating properties gave my pores a deeper cleaning than some of the traditional gel cleansers I used in the past. Depending on the time of day I washed my face, I would follow up with the Restoring Marine Serum or Marine Night Therapy.
After one use I could feel a difference, but after one week of using the product, some of my redness began to fade. I noticed my uneven textured skin began to be a little less noticeable.
After a month of use, I felt way more confident in the look and feel of my skin. The bar helped calm my inflamed skin and kept new breakouts at bay. For me, the $7.99 sticker price is budget-friendly and the product lasts way longer than 30 days! I’m still on the same facial bar as I write this (about 50 days in).

While cleaning your face seems straight forward - wet your face, apply cleanser and rinse - there are ways to get much more out of your facial cleanser and maximize its benefits. Here’s how to get the most out of your facial cleanser:
Clean your face in the morning and at night. Throughout the day, your skin is exposed to environmental toxins, pollution and build up including dirt and oil. This can clog skin’s pores. Before your head touches your pillow, you will want to make sure your skin is clean and prepped for optimal skin cell regeneration. When you sleep, the human growth hormone (HGH) is released and helps to restore collagen and regenerate skin cells at night. It’s best to help aid this process with clean skin. Why should you also cleanse in the morning? Your pillowcase carries dead skin cells, bacteria and germs, even if you wash it often. This then ends up on your face.
Hands can be full of oil and germs. Before cleaning your face, be sure you use clean hands or a fresh, clean cloth to cleanse your face. Using a washcloth can help exfoliate the skin, but you’ll want to make sure you use a fresh cloth daily. Why? Using the same dingy washcloth over and over can spread bacteria and mold on your face.
The ideal time for cleansing your face is anywhere between 20 and 30 seconds. During this time, gently massage the cleanser onto your face. Anything after that can potentially irritate skin. But seriously, 30 seconds is hardly a chore, so there’s no reason to skip a cleanse!
Even if your facial cleanser claims to remove makeup, it’s best to use an actual makeup remover first. Makeup these days is made to exist on the face for a long time. There’s waterproof, smudge-proof and 48-hour lasting makeup. Use an actual oil-based makeup remover. Now there are several natural makeup remover options that help to break down long-lasting makeup. Or if you prefer DIY, there are some great coconut oil mixtures out there you can make at home. Doing this before cleansing allows more makeup to be taken off and allows your cleanser to wash away the rest.
One might think it’s best to use hot water to open the pores. However, hot water can strip your face of natural oils and dry out skin. It’s best to use a lukewarm water warm enough to open pores, but cool enough to not be harsh on your skin.
With so many great choices available, it's easier than ever to pick a cleanser that is right for your skin type and concerns. Our Purifying Gel Cleanser makes a great daily option as it is effective for all skin types and helps to gently detoxify and remove dirt, oil and impurities.
We hope these tips help you get the most out of your facial cleanser. It is important to remember that the best thing you can do is be consistent with your facial routine. Consistency is key to cleaner, clearer skin.

]]>Day 1: Banish Plastic Bags for Good
Take all of your plastic grocery bags to your local grocery store for them to recycle. If they don’t have a recycling center, you can always call 311 to find where you can take your stash of plastic bags to be recycled. Investing in reusable bags is not only more eco-friendly, but it’s also more convenient. We love all the patterns and colors ChicoBag offers. ChicoBags are bigger than the plastic bags at the grocery store so you can also cut down on trips to the car when unloading groceries. Keep a few bags stashed in your car for spur-of-the-moment shopping trips. ChicoBag also has a variety of bags including shopping bags and produce bags so you can stop using those plastic produce bags at the grocery store, and start taking your own to cut down on use of plastic. You can also stop buying sandwich bags. No, that doesn’t mean stop packing those cute snacky lunches for your kiddos, it just means you should make the switch to Stasher! Stasher bags are perfect for packing lunches, storing your meal prep and marinades, and hiking adventures. Throw them in the top rack of the dishwasher when you are done using them. Or consider transporting lunch and hiking food in
Day 2: Clean Up your Body & Beauty Routine
Ditch soaps, sunscreens, and other skin care products that have harsh ingredients that can end up in the water system. Yes, bath bombs are SO fun, but read those ingredients wisely! Some bath bombs have harsh dyes to turn your bath purple added to them Instead, opt for biodegradable options like our Hydrating Seaweed Bath that uses organic Seaweed with sea salt and natural essential oils. All of these things are found in nature, so you can feel good about what’s going down your drain. Also think about what you are using on your skin. It’s important to protect your skin from UV rays, but so many sunscreens use harsh ingredients that are not eco-friendly. Make the switch to an organic sunscreen like Manda Naturals. Manda uses organic ingredients to make their sunscreen and sources their ingredients from sustainable resources. It’s non-toxic and reef-safe.
Day 3: Clean out your closet
No, this definitely does not mean throw away clothes. Host a clothing swap or donate your clothes to a local thrift store or shelter. Cut down on your “fast fashion” purchases. Many major clothing chains produce clothing cheaply, with harsh dyes and harsh impacts on the environment, wasting water and emitting CO2 emissions. Instead, focus on the mentality that less is more. Stock your closet with basics and classic colors. Grab some essentials from eco-friendly clothing brands, like Arvin Goods. Arvin Goods recycle and reuse cotton to produce their clothing saving water and reducing CO2 emissions. If you need something flashy or unique for an occasion, instead of buying clothes, consider renting them. Many rental clothing companies now exist so you can find that dress or suit you may only wear once to a wedding or another event. This too can help reduce the purchasing of fast fashion.
Day 4: Start composting
It’s amazing how many food scraps we throw away each day. Most of these organic materials can be broken down and used for composting purposes. Using naturally decaying organic materials as compost is way more environmentally friendly than using harsh gardening soils full of pesticides or chemicals. Did you know our Whole Seaweed Detox Bath makes a wonderful composting agent and fertilizer? Even after you use it in your bath, instead of throwing away the leftover seaweed, mix it in with your compost to extract the nutrients from the bladderwrack seaweed. Additionally, egg shells also help to aerate soil, so consider dumping some of those in too!
Day 5: Limit one-time use items
Okay, we’ll admit this might be one of the harder things to implement regularly. We live in a world of convenience. Because of this it can be challenging to completely cut out one-time use items. Ease into this by being mindful about one-time use items. Invest in a reusable coffee container and water bottle from MiiR. Most coffee shops are happy to make your double-shot, coconut milk latte in your own coffee container. Some coffee shops may even give you a discount for bringing your own. This can help cut down on the use of paper, plastic, or styrofoam cups depending on what your local coffee house usually serves your morning cup of joe in. Carrying around a reusable water bottle ensures that you won’t only stay hydrated throughout the day, but you will also save plastic by foregoing the one-time use plastic water bottle. Plus, part of MiiR’s proceeds go back to organizations focused on sustainability efforts. If you were that student in college that always went above and beyond the class project, this next tip might be for you. When you go to a restaurant, take a reusable container from To-GoWare with you. You can stash leftovers in these containers or use them to carry your lunch in rather that using plastic zip-lock bags. Lastly, if you must use a one-time use item, look on the packaging to see if it’s compostable or made with post-consumer recycled plastic. Choosing one-time use products more wisely can have a huge impact and cut down on plastic waste.
Lastly, we leave you with this, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead
Stay committed and although these changes may be little, they will prove to be mighty in the long-run!
]]>While Earth Day may happen only once a year, The Seaweed Bath Co. strives to embody the spirit of Earth Day every day in our mission and values.
Our Packaging
To save plastic that otherwise may end up in our oceans, our shampoos, conditioners, and body washes use 100% post-consumer recycled plastic. Since 2012, the Seaweed Bath Co. has used 2,450,000 post-consumer recycled bottles for our products, conserving roughly 122,500 lbs (or 1,960,000 oz) of plastic!
Using recycled bottles ensures that no new plastic is being made for this, saving oil and reducing greenhouse emissions. Life Cycle Inventory studies claim that if just 1 out of every 200,000 people used post-consumer recycled bottles the impact could be huge.
How huge? 1150 tons of greenhouse gas emissions are eliminated (the equivalent of 240 cars a year)! View the full report and impacts.
Our Ingredients
Our hero ingredient, bladderwrack seaweed is sustainably harvested off the coast of Maine. The seaweed is cut in a way that allows it to grow to the same size or larger within a 36 month period. Additionally, as part of our commitment to the environment, we work to make intelligent, responsible raw material choices and choose ingredients from renewable plant sources whenever possible. At times, we choose not to use a plant-derived material for reasons of efficacy, consistency and safety. Furthermore, our products do not contain ingredients such as ammonia, chlorine, glycol solvents, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, artificial colorants, phosphates or petroleum distillates.
Our Lifestyle
We love our furry friends and consider them family. That’s why we do not test on animals and our products are Leaping Bunny Certified. Besides our love for animals, we are true lovers of the environment and take steps in our daily lives to do what we can to reduce, reuse, or recycle both as a team and as individuals. Our headquarters in Boulder both recycle and compost in the office. As individuals, we do what we can daily to make a meaningful impact.
We asked our team how they live a more eco-friendly lifestyle:
“We use only eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products (some store-bought and some DIY) in our house. With two young kids, we are constantly cleaning and doing laundry. We find these cleaning products to be just as effective, and because they do not have all of the chemicals and carcinogens, way less harmful for our children and the environment. “ - Allison Grossman, Co-Founder
“I purposely moved to a walkable neighborhood so that I could walk to the grocery store, restaurants, and coffee shops. I also use a people-powered lawn mower because it’s more eco-friendly.” - Kim, CEO
“We have a wood Pellet stove at our house, and use wood pellets as our primary source of heat. Wood pellets are a renewable, sustainable resource. “ - Mark, Sales
“I bring re-usable bags for all of my shopping purposes, as well as a reusable water bottles and coffee container to ensure I am not using Single Use Cups. I even have a re-usable straw to combat plastic waste! We also recycle and compost at home. I also volunteer at Local Food Banks and our Local Surfrider when I can!” -Chelsea, Sales
“I always keep a few reusable bags in my car to make sure I never forget them when out and about and decide at the last minute to go grocery shopping!” - Lindsay S., Operations
“I always take my refillable water bottle everywhere I go, even in restaurants that have self-serve water stations so I can fill up there and not use their plastic cups. It's also great for travel since all airports have water filling stations past security, so you can always keep hydrated (while saving plastic and money)." - Alex, Operations & Customer Service
“When taking showers, I try to stick to 3-4 minutes total to conserve as much water as possible. Sometimes it's only 30 seconds to a minute!” - Hannah, Marketing
“I use cloth napkins at home to cut down on paper waste and disposable napkins!” - Lindsay W., Marketing

]]>Volcanic ash can be used as a mild exfoliant for the skin. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, and cleanses pores. The exfoliating nature of volcanic ash may also help with the appearance of those pesky whiteheads and blackheads, without being as abrasive as some other exfoliants.
Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, aging skin, or normal skin, volcanic ash can be used by all. If you have particularly troubled skin, volcanic ash has been used by many to reduce the appearance of eczema, psoriasis, and acne.
Cleopatra was onto something because many anti-aging products on the market use volcanic ash for its anti-aging perks. Volcanic ash helps synthesize collagen in the skin which can help to keep skin looking firm and youthful. In addition, it is believed volcanic ash protects skin from environmental toxins, which can speed up the appearance of aging skin.
Because of the high sulfur content, volcanic ash helps the body to not only destroy bacteria, it resists it too! The sulfur found in volcanic ash also can help to protect against environmental toxins throughout the day so your face can feel clean and fresh all day!
Nowadays, it’s hard to get 8 hours of sleep, but that doesn’t mean you have to look tired. Cheat the system by looking more rested with volcanic ash. Many beauty enthusiasts believe volcanic ash can help reduce the appearance of puffy, dark circles underneath the eyes over time. Sign us up!

Okay, not just any bath, the perfect bath. Here are our four essential ingredients to achieve our perfect bath.
Our first bath essential is setting the mood with calming vibes. We dim the lights and use clean-burning candles to create a tranquil ambiance. When buying candles we look for candles that use 100% pure essential oils, like our own products, and are free of paraffin, dyes, or synthetic fragrances. Incorporating calming sounds can also be important in engaging the senses. We love streaming peaceful spa-like music with meditative undertones. From time to time, using a guided meditation app can be a nice uplifting change to focus on gratitude or being present.
Between the not-so-healthy eating habits encouraged by the holidays and other stressors holidays can bring, a warm bath might be just what the doctor ordered! According to Daily Mail, the temperature of your bath can offer different benefits, “Warm baths - 90-95F or 32-35C - open the pores and encourage sweating, which helps to release toxins,” writes Daily Mail contributor Pat Hagan. She also goes on to explain that warm baths may even help reduce blood sugar levels, and reduce pain in joints.
Add our Hydrating Seaweed Bath to hot water. We like using the calming lavender scent at night to help us unwind, and the eucalyptus peppermint in the morning to awaken our senses. The Hydrating Seaweed Bath contains a dynamic duo of both Argan and Kukui oil, in addition to bladderwrack seaweed to improve the look and feel of dry winter skin. Argan oil, rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, naturally comforts dry, troubled skin. Hawaiian Kukui oil, rich in oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, is a natural, nourishing moisturizer.
If your main goal is detox, reach for our Whole Seaweed Detox Bath. This simple, one ingredient soak packs a powerful punch. Whole, dried bladderwrack seaweed comes in this pouch with a small mesh bag. Simply put the bladderwrack seaweed in the mesh bag and steep it in your bath. The bladderwrack we sustainably harvest off the coast of Maine contains over 65 minerals and naturally helps to purify and restore skin.
Customize your lather with one of our Hydrating Body Washes or Purifying Detox Body Washes. The hydrating body wash creates moisturizing lather that leaves skin feeling hydrated, refreshed and renewed and combines nutrient-rich bladderwrack seaweed with coconut oil, aloe, and natural hydrating ingredients. Our Purifying Detox Body Washes combine nutrient-rich bladderwrack seaweed, green coffee extract and French clay to detoxify and cleanse for softer, smoother-looking skin. Our little trick to make the bath a little extra sudsy: give the body wash a squeeze while the bath is still running and it doubles as a bubble bath.
To engage all the senses, sometimes we like to sip on a hot green tea or a golden Turmeric latte for its anti-inflammatory properties while we soak. Or if you still have some of that bubbly left over from NYE, that’s okay to sip on too (we won’t tell anyone).
Here’s to health, happiness, and hydrotherapy in 2018! Happy New Year!

]]>Today, The Seaweed Bath Co. team created welcome kits for evacuees headed to our hometown of Austin. Please join us in our efforts to aid the victims of this tragedy. It’s going to be a long road to recovery, here are a few things you can do now to help those in need:
Donate Money:
Americares is an organization that distributes water, aid, medical supplies, and medical outreach. Americares is responding to those affected by Harvey and need more supplies to keep up with the demand.
Family to Family is raising money to bring much needed supplies like toiletries, box fans, clothing, cleanup supplies, blankets, inflatable mattresses, and more to families affected by Harvey.
The foodbanks in the region are in desperate need of donations to keep evacuees fed. Donate to the Galveston, Corpus Christi, Houston, or Southeast Food Banks. Can’t give money? Consider donating your time. You can also sign up to volunteer at the respective food banks via their website.
Save the Children organization is creating kid-friendly spaces with cribs and beds in shelters to create a sense of normalcy for the littlest survivors.
Some schools will remain closed due to extensive damage. Many children will be relocated to another school and conditions are expected to be crowded. Help teachers rebuild their classrooms and prepare for the influx of children by donating to Donors Choose Harvey Relief Fund.
Amazon and Whole Foods will match up to $1,000,000 in funding to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Harvey relief. To donate, copy and paste amazon.com/HarveyRelief into your browser, log into your Amazon account, and click the Amazon Pay button.
Michael and Susan Dell created Rebuild Texas Fund with a fundraising goal of $100 million. The Dells kicked off the fund by donating $18 million. The Dell Foundation donated $1 for every $2 donated by the public. You can still donate today by visiting their website here.
Donate Supplies:
Displaced families with babies are in need of diapers. The Texas Diaper Bank is collecting and distributing diapers to those affected by the hurricane. In addition, they are taking donations of baby wipes, pull-ups, and gently-used, clean clothing, bottles, and blankets. For a full list of what they need, visit their FAQ about Hurricane Harvey Relief.
The American Red Cross has set up an Amazon Wish List for supplies and food needed.
Help with Cleanup:
The Coastal Bend Recovery Group is in need of construction clean-up supplies. Send supplies or donations to purchase supplies so this organization can continue assisting with cleanup efforts.
If you live in Austin, you can sign up to volunteer and help with cleanup by visiting Hope Family Thrift Store.
